Recently a Northwest Airlines DC-10 was escorted down to the Schiphol airport. I am not sure if this is right, but I seem to have read somewhere that the pilot of the plane requested an escort. When offered other emergency support such as fire engines, he declined it.
Who pays for the money spent on scrambling the fighers
and other associated expenses in such cases? Does NW Airlines
have to shell it out, or does the US government pay for it, or does it work on the principle of reciprocity (i.e. if the Dutch airlines/government ever needs help, US will respond in kind)?
Or is such support covered under the NATO treaty, even
for civilian airlines?
It seems just as valuable as being told how to inflate life vests in case they crash into water. This can help prevent the spread of germs, they can be shown demonstrations on how to cover their mouth/noses when sneezing in the confined compartment where the same air gets circulated and is an incubator of spreading disease/flu.
Eg. a desert parked airliner. How much for a fly-ready one?
This has happened many times and i remember a few years ago a singaporean airlines plane faced the same problem. After trying all he can still if the wheels wont come out how will the pilot land the plane and save the passengers?
